CALDISS'

Focus areas

At CALDISS, we will support you in your research by developing your skills and possibilities to process digital data. We focus on new and partly unfamiliar areas within digital data and methodology, and also on preparing new solutions for more familiar data processing problems.

Building a data and knowledge centre: 'One-stop shop' for accessible data

CALDISS is always exploring and developing tools for harvesting and collecting new data forms, In particular the data often referred to as 'Big Data' in the social sciences.

At CALDISS' premises, particularly powerful hardware facilities which are suitable for calculating and visualising large data sets are made available to both students and researchers.

Advanced data processing

As a data and knowledge centre, CALDISS will not only help with access to and use of data, but also with the handling of special data challenges. Although CALDISS is conceptualised with a focus on new and partly unfamiliar areas within digital data and methodology, CALDISS also focuses on developing new solutions to well-known data processing problems.

Experimenting with new methods

CALDISS aims to investigate how new digital methods can be applied within the field of social science (such as network analysis, topic models, machine learning). CALDISS aspires to examine the utility of these methods within social science and provide information and inspiration about these methods to anyone affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Aalborg University (AAU) through concrete educational activities (workshops and presentations).

New software and advanced use of familiar software

With new methods comes new software. CALDISS will offer workshops on an ongoing basis in the use of new software solutions such as R and Python as well as workshops focusing on general upskilling in the use of software for which AAU already has a license; including STATA, SAS, NVivo and ArcGIS.

The need for new software and workshops is being identified on an ongoing basis.
